Hi

I found some Maori words that I thought I should share with you.

Maori is the  language of the original people of New Zealand.

So here they are!!!!!

A is pronounced as in “rather”
E is pronounced as in “ten”
I is pronounced as in the “ee” in “seen”
O is pronounced as in the “oa” in “board”
U is pronounced as in the “oo” in “bloom”

Maori- Pakeha

Tena koutou – Hello ( formal to many people )

Tena koe- Hello ( formal to one person )

Kia ora- Hello (informal )

Kia ora koutou- ( informal to a large group )

Haere mai- Welcome

Haere ra- Farewell

Ka pai – Good or well done

Ka pai nur- Very good or very well done

Numbers 1-10

Tah- One

Rua- Two

Tora- Three

Wha- Four

Rima- Five

Onu- Six

Whitu- Seven

Wahu- Eight

Iwa- Nine

Tekau- Ten

E noho- Sit down

E tu- Stand up

Whakarogo mai- Listen to me

T. tiro mai-  Look at me

Turi turi- Shh!

Kia ora tamatiki ma- Hello children

Ke te pehea koe?- How are you feeling?

Ke te………….- I am……………..

Pai- Fine

Koa-Happy

Ngenge-Tired

Porangi- Crazy

Werawera- Hot and Sweaty

Mata kai- Hungry

Mate- Sick

I got these words from Mr Breech when he came over with a school choir from New Zealand.

Cool! I don’t know any other languages except for English and a tiny bit of French…
